About Deregulation

Imagine if you couldn’t select your cell phone service provider, or the most competitive company for your car insurance. Well, just as you have the choice to select your cell phone service provider and your car insurance company, you also have the choice to select an energy services company.

Energy deregulation has enabled consumers to purchase their energy supply from an energy supplier of their choice. Since deregulation, the utility company is no longer the only option for energy supply. The transportation and the delivery of your energy remains regulated by the state. The local utility company still continues to deliver your energy through their wires and pipes.

Deregulation has increased competition among energy suppliers and bolstered a free market arena for consumers. It also produced new energy innovations, products and services that customers are able to shop for and purchase. When customers participate in energy deregulation, they benefit from competitive pricing for energy related products and services.

New York

Natural Gas & Electric Choice Programs

In 1996, the New York State Public Service Commission approved plans to allow customers the option to buy their natural gas and electric supply from companies other than their local utility company. Since then, hundreds of thousands of commercial, industrial, and residential customers have chosen to purchase their energy from an Energy Service Company (ESCO), rather than their utility.

As of 2008, in New York State, more than 600,000 natural gas customers and over 1.1 million electric customers switched to an ESCO. There are also more than 1.1 million customers in New York State that have switched to an ESCO for their electricity supply.

Today, we provide energy supply to customers served by the following utilities in the State of New York:

  • Central Hudson
  • Con Edison
  • National Fuel
  • National Grid
  • New York State Gas and Electric
  • Orange and Rockland
  • Rochester Gas and Electric
